My first "WEAK"!!

As I sit in my room, laptop half hanging out the window looking for Wi-fi like a typical Zimbo, I am so tempted to sleep!!However, procrastination is still my forté, and so my writing begins on a chilly Sunday night at 11pm!! Similar to last week, I enjoyed attending the evening service at St Mark’s where Gary spoke on submission of wives to their husbands, and more relevant to me(and some of you), submission to authority that God has appointed as well being subject to your masters(eg. bosses) with all respect.(1PETER 2: 13-25) …moral of the story… saying,”Only God can tell me what to do”, probably won’t cut it!

LET THE DUTIES BEGIN

Patrick is right on the money here!

Make no mistake my dear reader, this blog title is not misspelled! My first week having duties left me just that, WEAK!In case you’re a little in the dark, during the course of the year (2016…just in case you’re behind for whatsoever reason) I’ll be serving at TAS where as one of the gappies, I’m placed in various departments around the school to assist in whatever way is required.

Middle School

Middle School is for year 6 to year 8 students, which is roughly the same as grade 6 to form 1. This is the first place I was attached to, and in only a week is beginning to really make me wonder if teaching is all I thought it to be! Okay to be fair, it’s not that bad, however I can never quite get over how “unique” some questions are.

Some students though are very intelligent…

I assisted in a year7 maths class, and the teacher was explaining that septagon (heptagon) is 7 sided because sept refers to 7.A student then queried why September was the 9th month of the year, to which another student, (a round faced Japanese boy who didn’t seem too amused at the pace the class was going) explained that, “because July was named after Julius Caesar and August, Augustus Caesar, the introduction of the two months pushed SEPTember 2months down the line.” I don’t know if that’s common knowledge, but I was jolly impressed!!

At the end of one lunch duty at middle school, I gave the kids a good laugh. Whilst i wish it would have been because of one of my Savannah dry jokes, it was unfortunately because I had accidentally sat on some bird…(stuff) and there was a mark on my pants to prove it! They were very keen to capture the moment.

I ought to be more careful on choosing where I sit!

SCIENCE LABS

Call me over-ambitious or a big dreamer, but when I was attached to science for a portion of my schedule, I WAS ECSTATIC!!I thought I’d be getting to blow stuff up, or at the very least, lending a helping hand in finding the cure for cancer. Though yes, you guessed it, I was deeply disappointed, for the contrary proved to be true. Like all great scientists, I was geared up, gloves on, lab coat on(well it’s actually an apron) and BAM!the washing & scrubbing began. (sorry for the anti-climax folks haha)
Zimbo goes Scrubb-o

Though, science labs was not all Doom and grease, some ‘cool’ things did happen. I was able to accompany a shopping excursion for experiment requirements, which might not sound interesting, but I got to see my first china shop!!oh how it reminded me of home…flea market in a store!lol

Additionally, I got a promotion… no more hand washing.. I’m using the washing machine with the big boys now! Thank goodness, because the very next day there was over a 100 test tubes that required my expertise.

SPORT

Whilst Tennis is my preferred choice of sport when it comes to playing, in an interesting turn of events, I was attached to Triathlon. Practise is twice a week, and from what I’ve seen, those athletes don’t get the recognition they deserve! If I even attempted to swim more than a 100metres, I’d probably find myself ringing the bell at Heaven’s gate!
A member of staff kindly asked if I’d kindly take his “small” group of Year 1’s for cricket one afternoon…I said yes and signed myself up for the longest hour of my life! Whilst there were only 5 of them, the behaviour of one particular individual left me convinced I had at least 20 children there. Basically this boy wanted to take the practise himself, and if things didn’t go his way, I’m sure the Childline Centre in Sydney almost 500km away, heard him cry! It was at this point the wise words of Mark Harrison, the middle school head, resonated in my head…
“At that age(Year1), They’re not people! They’re just little things that look like people!!”

And boy’o’boy is that the truth!

Nevertheless, it was a great first week and I greatly look forward to more interesting encounters with the children! To round it off, we, The chosen 6, aka “the gappies”, had our year photo taken, and feeling that one snap was definitely not enough..our very humble-selves (no need for sneers here) continued the photo shoot outside the photos venue.

GAPPIES 2K16- THE WORLD IN ONE

Expect a special mid-week blog where I’ll highlight some awesome and strange things I have either experienced or seen thus far…( some things are just..”like really?!”)

Thank you for reading, and hope to get a visit from you soon!
All good wishes,
Nesu4Jesu
